5 Signs Your Newborn Photographer Prioritises Safety

By Deborah Longmore Photography | Newborn Photography Tamworth & Birmingham

When it comes to newborn photography, capturing beautiful, timeless images is only one part of the experience — the most important part is keeping your baby safe. As a parent, you should feel confident that your photographer knows exactly how to handle, pose, and care for your baby throughout the session. Hopefully this blog will help you spot the newborn photographer safety signs.

So how do you know if your chosen photographer truly prioritises safety? Here are five key signs to look for before booking your session.

1. They’ve Had Proper Newborn Photography Training

Safety isn’t something a photographer can simply “pick up” over time — it requires professional training. A safety-conscious newborn photographer will have invested in specialist workshops and courses focused on newborn handling, posing, and studio safety.

At Deborah Longmore Photography, I’ve undertaken extensive newborn safety training to ensure your baby is always secure and supported in every pose. Your little one’s wellbeing is never left to chance. I am also a newborn trainer and have been awarded the titles of Top 10 International Newborn and Baby Photographer yearly from 2016 to date.

2. They Never Force a Pose

A true professional knows that not every pose is safe for every baby. If a baby is unsettled, uncomfortable, or simply not suited to a certain position, a photographer who prioritises safety will never push it.

Your newborn’s flexibility and comfort come first. All poses should be gentle, supported at all times, and appropriate for your baby’s age and development. In some images, what you don’t see — like the supporting hands edited out later — is just as important as what you do.

3. They Keep the Studio Environment Safe and Comfortable

From temperature to cleanliness, a safety-first photographer creates a calm, controlled environment. The studio should be warm enough for a sleepy, undressed baby — but not too hot. All blankets, props, and wraps should be freshly laundered and baby-safe.

At my studio, I take care to sanitise surfaces between sessions, wash all fabrics in sensitive detergent, and maintain a warm, peaceful setting where your baby can rest easily. No harsh lights. No chaos. Just calm.

4. They Work With an Assistant or Ask for Parental Help During Poses

Certain poses — like the popular “froggy” position — are created as composites, meaning multiple images are taken with hands supporting the baby at all times, then seamlessly edited together.

A responsible newborn photographer will either have a trained assistant or ask a parent to spot their baby throughout these more complex shots. No pose should ever be done without support — ever.

5. Look for Unsafe Posing or Poor Editing in Portfolios

Before booking a newborn photographer, take time to closely examine their portfolio. Be cautious of photos where the baby’s head, neck, or limbs appear unsupported or unnaturally twisted — these can be signs of unsafe posing. A responsible photographer will always support delicate areas, and often use composite editing to create poses that look complex but are actually done in stages with full support.

Also, look out for editing that seems rushed — blotchy skin, awkward shadows, or over-smoothed features can indicate a lack of care or experience in post-production. High-quality, safety-conscious work will always reflect both careful handling and thoughtful editing.
