What to Expect from a Newborn Photography Session
Choosing a newborn photographer can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re trying to find someone who is not only experienced and safe, but also able to capture those timeless images you’ll treasure forever. One of the biggest uncertainties new parents face is not knowing what a session actually looks like—how many props or poses are included, how long it will take, or what happens if baby doesn’t settle. So I thought I would share some newborn photography example galleries
This blog is here to answer those questions and more, so you can feel confident and relaxed when booking your newborn photography session.
What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?
At Deborah Longmore Photography, every newborn session includes 3–5 different styled prop setups, each carefully chosen and styled based on your colour preferences. I capture a variety of angles and close-ups for each setup to create a full, beautiful gallery. After props, we move to the beanbag poses, which I flow through gently using a posing system that allows me to move baby with minimal disruption. The result? A smooth, calm session where baby stays relaxed and content.
Many parents are pleasantly surprised at how calm, enjoyable, and stress-free the whole experience is. My goal is to create a soothing environment where both you and baby feel safe and cared for.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What if my baby doesn’t sleep or is unsettled?
That’s absolutely okay! My sessions are completely baby-led—meaning I’ll follow baby’s natural rhythm and cues. You don’t need to worry about keeping baby asleep or settled. I’ve worked with every kind of temperament: sleepy, alert, colicky, refluxy, breastfed, bottle-fed, with or without a dummy.
You’ll also receive a Newborn Session Prep Guide ahead of time, with helpful tips to gently prepare baby for the session. If baby needs a feed, a cuddle, or just a moment, we’ll stop, take a break, and go at their pace. It’s also a perfect time for parents to relax, grab a cup of tea, and chat.
2. Are props and outfits included?
Yes! I provide a curated collection of high-quality, handmade outfits, bonnets, headbands, felted teddies, and more. All my props are sourced from talented vendors around the world and beautifully colour-coordinated. You’ll let me know your preferred colour palette before the session, and I’ll style everything to match your vision.
Want something extra special or themed—like a Harry Potter set or incorporating heritage pieces? Just let me know at booking and I’ll make it happen.
3. How long does a newborn session last?
My sessions typically last between 2–3 hours, but I always allow extra time if needed. Since I only take one session per day, there’s never a rush. If baby needs a bit more time to settle, it’s absolutely no problem.
The ideal window for posed newborn photography is 6–21 days old, when babies are naturally more curled and sleepy. However, I also offer newborn sessions up to 10 weeks old, perfect if baby has been in hospital, you’ve had a C-section, or simply need a little more time to adjust.
What Does a Full Gallery Look Like?
If you’re wondering what kind of variety you’ll receive in your final images, I’ve made it easy for you—I share full example galleries on my website. These galleries include images from each prop setup and a range of beanbag poses (often taken from different angles), so you know exactly what to expect.
Family and sibling images are always included if you wish to have them, although I respect your privacy if you prefer not to share them online.
Other Things to Consider When Choosing a Photographer
- Ask how many sets are included. Some photographers may only offer 2 wrapped sets unless you pay extra. I provide 3–5 prop setups as standard, with a mix of wrapped and posed options.
- Prep guides matter. Be sure your photographer offers a prep guide ahead of your session—it can make a huge difference in how smoothly things go.
- Award-winning photographers have their work regularly judged and critiqued, which can be a great indication of their skill, attention to safety, and consistent quality.
- Cheaper photographers may offer fewer props, minimal editing, or rushed sessions because they take on more work. High-end newborn editing is time-consuming, and not all photographers invest that time if they’re working at volume.
- Look for photographers who don’t take multiple sessions a day. This means your session won’t feel rushed, and there’s flexibility if baby needs extra time. I only take one newborn session per day, so your baby has my full attention and care.
