One week in June was a special one in the Deborah Longmore Photography studio – my son joined me for work experience, and honestly? I couldn’t be prouder.
We kicked off his first day with a bit of training – a deep dive into lighting, camera settings, and how to bring out those gorgeous little expressions I love capturing in sitter sessions (for babies aged 6 to 9 months). He soaked it all in like a sponge – asking great questions, setting things up, tweaking lighting, and showing that creative spark I always hoped he’d inherit!
After our training day, it was time to get stuck in with a real session. We had some beautiful little sitters booked in (along with other sessions), and my son took the reins with the camera – seriously, he was in control for the majority of the shoot! I did jump in here and there (I can’t resist!), but it was mostly his show… and wow, on one session, both boys – my son and our adorable little model – absolutely smashed it.
Sitter sessions are some of my favourites – those cheeky grins, chunky thighs, and curious little fingers exploring everything around them. They’re a perfect age for capturing personality, and this session did not disappoint.

Now here’s the fun twist: despite only having the camera in my hands for what felt like about 10 minutes, I ended up submitting a few of my shots from that session to the Guild of Photographers… and all three of them won awards! Not too shabby, hey? I think that just proves two things: sitter sessions are packed with potential, and my son must’ve had some solid training!
I loved watching him work, seeing how quickly he adapted, and feeling that little flicker of pride every time he lined up a shot and nailed it. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love photography – not just for the images, but for the people, the memories, and now, the family moments behind the lens too.
