Bringing your brand new baby to a newborn photoshoot might feel a little daunting—but it truly doesn’t have to be. Over the years, I’ve had so many lovely new parents tell me just how surprised they were at how calm, relaxed, and completely stress-free their newborn session turned out to be.
This made me wonder—what had they expected? 🤔 After chatting with quite a few of these wonderful mums and dads, I realised I needed to write a blog that would ease the nerves of future parents-to-be.
So here it is! 💕 Below, I’ve gathered the most frequently asked questions (and common worries) I hear about newborn sessions—and my honest answers.
💤 What if my baby doesn’t sleep or is a bit fussy?
Please don’t worry—not for a second. My sessions are 100% baby-led. I’ve worked with all sorts of babies: wide awake, sleepy, refluxy, colicky, breastfed, bottle-fed, dummy-lovers and dummy-refusers. I’m here to read your baby’s cues, and there’s never any pressure for them to behave a certain way.
Before your session, I’ll share a few little tips to help things go smoothly. But ultimately, if baby wants a cuddle, feed, or nappy change—we stop. There’s always time for a tea and a chat too ☕💬
👶 Do I need to dress the baby or bring special outfits?
Nope—I’ve got it all covered 😊
I have a gorgeous, carefully curated collection of handmade outfits, bonnets, headbands, and adorable props like hand-felted teddies. Everything is colour-matched and styled with great care to suit your tastes.
If you have a particular theme in mind (Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh, rainbows 🌈—you name it!), just let me know when you book. I love creating bespoke sessions that are meaningful to your family.
⏱️ How long does a newborn session last? What’s the ideal age?
Most sessions last between 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on baby’s mood and needs. The ideal age for those sleepy, curled-up poses is 6 to 21 days, but I also photograph older newborns, and we can still create stunning portraits.
🙈 What if my baby doesn’t “perform”? Will you judge us?
Oh my goodness—absolutely not. I’ve been a new parent myself and I remember how nerve-wracking it can be. Every baby is different, and every session is shaped around your little one’s personality and needs. My job is to make you feel relaxed and supported throughout 🧡
💩 What if there’s a little accident during the shoot?
It’s completely expected! I usually photograph babies without nappies for a more natural look, so a few surprises now and then are part of the job. All my wraps, blankets, and props are freshly washed and regularly replaced. (And yes—I’ve got plenty of funny poo stories too!) 😂
🖼️ When will we see the finished photos?
Typically, you’ll be able to view a your beautiful gallery within two weeks. It’s a lovely chance to revisit those magical moments🥰
You’ll get to select your favourite images and explore our stunning wall art options, all designed with your home and personal style in mind. A beautifully framed newborn portrait is such a timeless centrepiece for any space.
👶 What if baby arrives early or late?
No problem at all. I book sessions provisionally based on your due date, and we adjust once baby makes their grand entrance. Booking while you’re still pregnant ensures you’ll have a spot, and we’ll stay in touch so everything goes smoothly.
☕ So, What Can You Expect?
To sit back and relax. Snuggle up on a comfy sofa, sip something warm, maybe have a little snooze, and just enjoy watching your beautiful baby being photographed in the most peaceful way.
We’re going to create something truly meaningful and magical together. These photographs are more than just pictures—they’re treasured memories that last a lifetime.
