At Deborah Longmore Photography, I know how magical (and sometimes overwhelming!) pregnancy can be. Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, maternity photography is such a special way to celebrate your growing bump and the journey to motherhood. To help you feel confident, relaxed, and absolutely radiant during your session, I’ve put together my top maternity photography tips —so you can walk in feeling prepared and walk out with memories you’ll treasure forever.
1. Timing Is Everything – When to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot
The sweet spot for maternity photography is usually between 28–34 weeks. By this time, your bump is beautifully round, but you’re still likely to feel comfortable enough to move around and pose with ease. Everyone carries differently, so if you’re expecting twins or showing earlier, we can always adjust the timeline to suit you.
📅 Tip: My diary can book up fast, so I always recommend getting in touch as early as your second trimester to secure your preferred date.
2. What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
This is one of the most common questions I get—what should I wear to my maternity session?
Whether you want something timeless, soft and romantic, or bold and editorial, the key is to choose outfits that make you feel beautiful and comfortable. Flowy dresses, fitted gowns that accentuate your bump, or even casual jeans and a crop top can work wonders. I also have a carefully curated client wardrobe that you’re welcome to use during your session.
👗 Tip: Soft neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on you and your bump. Avoid busy patterns or logos.
3. Bring the Family (If You Want To!)
Your maternity session can be just for you, a quiet, empowering moment of connection with your baby—or it can include your partner, other children, or even a pet! I love capturing the joy, excitement, and love that surrounds your growing family.
🐾 Tip: If little ones are joining us, bring snacks, toys, or something they love to help them feel comfortable and keep them engaged.
4. Pamper Yourself Before the Shoot
You deserve to feel amazing. If you can, schedule a little self-care time before your shoot—a light makeup touch-up, hair styling, or even just a relaxing bath. Many of my clients say it’s the first time in ages they’ve taken a moment just for themselves.
💄 Tip: I can recommend trusted local hair and makeup artists if you’d like a little help getting camera-ready!
5. Trust the Process (And Me!)
If you’re feeling nervous about being in front of the camera—don’t worry. It’s completely normal! My sessions are relaxed, natural, and guided. I’ll walk you through simple, flattering poses and prompts to capture genuine emotion and those beautiful bump moments.
📸 Tip: Just be yourself. The best photos come from real moments and honest connections—not stiff poses.
6. Location, Location: Studio or Outdoors?
At Deborah Longmore Photography, maternity sessions can take place either in my warm, welcoming studio or out on location for a more natural, scenic vibe. Think golden-hour fields, woodlands, or even a place that holds special meaning to you.
🏞️ Tip: The studio is a great option for intimate, styled shoots, especially in cooler months. Outdoor shoots are perfect for romantic sunset lighting and relaxed, nature-inspired images.
