Top 5 Mistakes Parents Make When Choosing a Newborn Photographer

By Deborah Longmore Photography | Newborn Photography Tamworth & Birmingham

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a magical moment — one you’ll want to cherish forever. Capturing those first precious days with professional newborn photography is a beautiful way to preserve those memories. But with so many photographers out there, how do you make the right choice? Want to avoid the Top 5 mistakes people make when choosing a newborn photographer?

As a specialist in newborn photography, I’ve met many parents who wish they’d known a few things before they booked their first session. So here it is — the top 5 mistakes to avoid when choosing your newborn photographer….

1. Choosing Based on Price Alone

We get it — having a baby is expensive. But when it comes to professional photography, you truly get what you pay for. Newborn photography is an art that takes time, training, and experience. Cheaper photographers often lack the skills, equipment, or time to deliver polished, safe, and high-quality results.

Low-cost photographers may also cram multiple sessions into one day, which means your photos are rushed, and the editing? Even more so. When you invest in a seasoned professional, you’re not just paying for photos — you’re paying for safety, patience, creativity, and years of hands-on experience.

2. Not Checking for Newborn Safety Training

Your baby’s safety is the number one priority. Yet many new or budget photographers haven’t been trained in how to safely pose or handle newborns. Always ask your photographer about their newborn safety practices.

At Deborah Longmore Photography, I’ve completed dedicated newborn safety training and I follow best practices for every session. From the temperature of the room to how your baby is positioned and supported — every little detail matters.

3. Overlooking Editing & Retouching Quality

Beautiful newborn photography doesn’t stop at clicking the shutter. Professional editing is where the magic happens. From gently softening baby skin to removing redness or flakes, skilled retouching enhances your images while keeping them natural and timeless.

Cheaper or high-volume photographers often rush through the editing process because they’re juggling too many sessions. That means your photos might lack that polished, professional finish you deserve. I dedicate hours to lovingly edit every image by hand, so each one is frame-worthy.

4. Not Researching the Photographer’s Style

Every photographer has a unique style — light and airy, dark and moody, posed, lifestyle, or minimalist. Choosing someone whose portfolio doesn’t align with your taste can leave you disappointed.

Take time to look through full galleries (not just Instagram highlights!) and ask yourself:
Do I love the way they use light? The props and poses? The final editing style?
My style is soft, elegant, and baby-led — with a focus on natural tones and gentle posing.

5. Waiting Too Long to Book

Many parents don’t realise that newborn sessions should be booked before the baby arrives, ideally during your second trimester. The best time to photograph newborns is between 5–14 days old, while they’re still sleepy and easily posed. I do, however, offer newborn sessions up to 10 weeks old.

As a specialist newborn photographer, I book only a limited number of sessions per month to provide the highest level of service. If you wait too long, your ideal photographer (hopefully me! 😉) might already be fully booked.

💖 Final Thoughts: You Deserve the Best

Choosing your newborn photographer is more than just a box to check — it’s a decision that will shape how you remember these early, fleeting days. Take the time to choose someone with the training, experience, and heart to capture your little one safely and beautifully.

At Deborah Longmore Photography, I treat every baby as if they were my own. My sessions are calm, unhurried, and tailored to you — because your memories deserve nothing less than excellence.
